Things I’ve been seeing lately…
So…..the year is almost over and yet again, the good ol US of A has led the world in obesity and the most obese children also live in America as well. How did we manage to keep our title? Well, the list of excuses is long but at some point the blame falls on each of us individually and as a family unit. There are currently over 30,000 subway franchises worldwide. Can you imagine the amount of fake turkey, salami, and roast beef that is not only produced but also consumed? Kinda hurts my stomach just thinking about it… Sure eating half a sandwich is “portion control” but add in the bag of chips and the large drink, usually soda, and the calories increase very very fast. McDonalds tried to add some healthy salads but the dressing they provide voids out anything healthy in their styrofoam containers. Their chemists even figured out how to serve drive thru oatmeal. Mmmm….NOT! One of the latest fads to hit restaurant row (use the term restaurant very loosely) is Chipotle. Fresh chicken! Farm raised beef! Cilantro and lime rice! And a culinary masterpiece is created before your very eyes ala Subway. Don’t forget the huge flour tortilla that keeps all those fresh ingredients together. Sigh….just like its predecessor Baja Fresh, La Salsa and some other slave chain eateries, the fast Mexican food menu has helped make us fatter and less athletic. Think about it fellow blog reader…the obesity epidemic began about 10-15 years ago when Baja Fresh was just a small chain of fresh healthy food. Then they were bought by Wendy’s and assembly line food began rearing its calorie laden head by the close of the century. Lots of rice to plump up the burrito. Flour tortilla so we could eat on the run because we just can’t seem to slow our lives down (Btw…nobody is running anywhere!) Get the point? Not yet? Ok, so how about one of the greatest inventions of the last 50 years, the lap band surgery! Now each and every overweight American can totally bypass the gym and eat till they weigh over 300lbs and in one afternoon have their stomach reduced to the size of a quarter . Are you freaking kidding me?!?! Celebrity endorsements, huge billboards on our streets, and tv, radio, and Internet advertising made lap band surgery more famous than TMZ could ever do. And what happened to these former fat people who dropped pant sizes faster than Usain Bolt? They gained it all back plus more!! Shocking you say? Hardly. They never learned to eat correctly. They kept eating their shitty diet of fake burgers, fried potatoes, and sugary colas. Coke zero? Really?? Btw…McDonald’s also owned Chipotle for about 8 years and that’s why there is one on almost every major street throughout the country.
One of the major stories this year was the ever popular pink slime. Remember that? Treat the cow meat that has been fed corn and antibiotics and give it a bath in ammonia to kill any unwanted micro organisms. Yummy!! We were not born to live like this….and with over 310 million Americans something will push us over the edge and it won’t be the government’s fiscal cliff. The current version of wheat being grown in our nations farms are not the same grains that our parents and grandparents grew up with. It is a chemically produced grain that has serious side effects that are making our citizens very very sick.Who even heard the word gluten five years ago? An epidemic is rising and our drug companies won’t be able to manufacture a pill that’s strong enough to save us.
So what’s the bottom line? 2012 has been an interesting year for us and 2013 will hold even more surprises that will shape and change our minds hopefully for the good but I’m not keeping much hope. It is on each of us to figure out what works for us nutritionally and because of that issue a lot of people will seek out help. As a professional trainer I can only help so many people and the tv show Biggest Loser has people dying to get on, literally because their tiny hearts can’t support 500 lbs of human flesh. A wake up call will come and from what I can see, it will affect millions of people and not in a good way. I welcome your comments and ideas so that at least a few people who are sick and tired of being sick and tired can get a fresh perspective on their lives and hopefully make a change for the better and start exercising and eating healthier. Bring on the new year because I’m ready….how about you?
