Over the last 10 years there has been an explosion of diets, juice cleanses, and home delivery services that have made more than a few people feel lost, frustrated and often times ashamed because it feels like they have failed themselves when the weight doesn’t melt off their bodies as advertised. Before you go and spend that hard earned money on pills and potions perhaps we should be asking ourselves a different question. What kind of body do I have? Yes, it’s true. People are built in all shapes and sizes and there is a reason for it. Don’t believe me? Take a walk around the mall. Ever been down to 3rd street in Santa Monica? Or the king of people watching, Disneyland. Tall, short, fat, skinny. Arms, legs, hands, feet. Each person has their own traits and yet all the same characteristics. 2 eyes, 2 ears, 1 nose and a mouth. But, fear not loyal blog reader…..I have some help.
Somatotypes. Say it with me. So-Ma-To-Types. Developed by psychologist William Shelton back in the 1940’s it was used to determine body types and their temperament. Over the years, the latter was dropped and the body typing remained and though we may have some of each type, people are more predisposed to have 2 types rather than all three. So what are they?
Ectomorph: Narrow hips and shoulders. Thin and narrow face. Very little bodyfat. Thin legs and arms.
Mesomorph: Large head. Broad shoulders. Narrow waist. Muscular body. Very little bodyfat. Genetically “gifted”.
Endomorph: Wide hips and narrow shoulders. Wide bone structure. Slower metabolism. Weight gain is easy. Fat loss is slow.
Now that we have identified the different types of bodies we can start to figure out how to train them and feed the correct things and at the correct times throughout the day. Email me with any questions at www.flatbellyla.com
